Painting pictures with words, telling stories with photographs
Each one of us has a special place enshrined in our heart to which we return
whether physically or in our imagination – time and time again. For me, that lodestar is Iona, a tiny Hebridean island off the west coast of Scotland. It is an almost tangibly spiritual place, steeped in history and legend.
This has been the inspiration for my first collection of poems and photographs, Sounds of Iona. Whether you already know and love Iona, are discovering it for the first time, or are an armchair traveller, I invite you on a journey of the heart, hoping that you too will be captivated by its magic.
Poetry engenders a three-way dialogue between writer, reader and subject.
It is when these three elements are in synchronicity that the words on the page can take flight and soar. Perhaps that is what inspiration is, giving ideas shape, substance and the space to breathe and take on a life of their own. Add to this the alchemy between words and visual images, much beloved of the Japanese masters of haiku, and the creative dynamic is enhanced still further.
I have enjoyed painting pictures with words, conveying the sound of the sea in the cadence of the poetry and capturing moods, emotions and a ‘story’ in my photographs of Iona. I hope you will share my enthusiasm for this very special place.

National Poetry Day
National Poetry Day (October 6th) seems a good time to reflect on my Book Launch on the Island of Iona in early September. In spite of my pre-event nerves, the evening went well and there was a real buzz about the place. A big thank you to my mentors and guides Angela Locke and Malcolm MacGregor for their kind words, and also to friends who have supported my journey and encouraged me to believe in myself. I was delighted by the enthusiastic response from the audience and the many positive comments I received.
‘A joy to happen on your book launch. All very heartfelt, professional and enjoyable. Since then, I have read and reread the poems and they really chime with me. Thank you both for your company and the poems. Iona is indeed a very special place.'

‘Your book gave me calm and perspective at the end of a long day.’

I am also thrilled that the Iona Community Shop (immediately opposite the abbey) has agreed to stock ‘Sounds of Iona.’ I have spent many happy hours browsing their wonderful selection of books, many published by Wild Goose Publications, the publishing arm of the Iona Community. I encourage you to do the same! Of course, if your path does not take you to Iona, you can purchase my new book via this website. Whether you already know and love the tiny Hebridean island of Iona, are discovering it for the first time, or are an armchair traveller, I hope that this poetry collection will strike a chord with you too.
‘A collection of poems and photographs that bring to mind both the wildness and wonder of the island of Iona. Pilgrimages here for armchair travellers and regular visitors alike. Enjoy.'
(Ruth Burgess: writer and editor, member of the Iona Community)
During my recent time on Iona, I was privileged to work with acclaimed photographer Malcolm MacGregor. See my Snapshot Page, for some of my work inspired by Sandeels Beach on Iona.
